24 hours road trip in Tunisia

A road trip in Tunisia, destination the desert ?! Oh yeah, I’m more than IN !

I was very excited about the idea, eager to go and to explore! I don’t even know where I should start as my eyes were overwhelmed of what I saw.

Let’s start with the beginning: so departure on Tuesday morning, woke up at the sunrise, 4:45am to be precise, I jumped straight to the shower – after my alarm rang 5 times. I left with my uncle, a few staff of Voyage en Asie, whom became my friends and family here!

We picked up everyone on the way, we passed by “La chaussée Romaine”, a road joining Djerba island and the African continent. 157 km of road then we saw Tataouine, a small town of 70k inhabitants, well-known for hosting the Star Wars film crew. So we did a stroll in the center, where we discovered the market called “souk” while exploring the tiny streets.

After 2 hours of walk, we headed to Chenini! See by yourself, it was absolutely wonderful! This small Berber village of 14k inhabitants, is located at the top of the hills, goes unnoticed. It’s so impressive! Also for your information, the architecture, so clean and so white on the pictures is actually a mosquée. I’m not gonna tell you the heat we had, to climb to the top of the mountains under 40 degrees, is a real sport, mostly impossible mission. But I can tell you that it’s very worth it, the view is breathtaking!

1 hour later after taking loads and loads of pictures, we decided to go to our next destination which was the DESERT!!!!! YASSSS!

Headed to Ksar Ghilane (154km from Chenini) an oasis located in the South of Tunisia and one of the doors of the Tunisian Sahara desert. The trip was very very long. We crossed a road where there was absolutely nothing, but when I’m telling you nothing there was nothing. Nobody, not even a dromedary or a local and his flock of sheep. Few kilometers past, we see a coffee shop, the Loutid in the middle of hills and sand. It’s pretty funny and unlikely!

It’s 4pm! Arrived at Ksar Ghilane, we discovered the oasis and the campement where we stayed for a night. We were at Le campement Paradis. It was great, there were large tents that can accommodate 3 to 4 people, also there was a restaurant, a bar where we were able to enjoy the billards which were all dusty (to tell you that the place at the beginning of the season was uncrowded). We had neither the beach, nor the pool but a hot water source where we could swim.

6pm before the Ramadan fasting break, we did a small stroll in dromedary and not camel – I’m always confusing. It was awesome! Madness landscapes, only the desert and you 🙂

The day after, we woke up at 4:30am to see the sunrise then big activity: a QUAD session! I was so excited that I pretended I was a super driver that we had a small accident with Jalila who was at the back lol If that moment was filmed, guys I’m sure you will be bent to laugh. Can you imagine the scene? Instead of following the tracks of the guide in front of me, in a big dune descent, I followed another path and the handlebars twisted. We pulled ourselves far ahead, quad returned, Jalila ended up doing somersaults and same for me haha – it was very very funny but at the moment the others when I saw the others, they were so scared! Anyway when I’m thinking about it now it makes me laugh. It was a great great time!

To finish our road trip, we went through Matmata, known also for scenes shot of the movie Star Wars. Honestly I never watched the film series because it’s definitely not my thing, but I just know that these films were shot here 😛 Voilà! In summary, I overkilled my road trip! A pure life experience of craziness, breathtaking landscapes, strong emotions and lot of  fun in the desert – very impressive, it was another world! One more adventure to classify in “unforgettable”. 😀

Beautiful pictures! And now I need to know…is the Star Wars planet Tatooine named after the town of Tataouine? Because that’s pretty cool. 🙂
